The social life of cities

Thinking about social design for cities is lagging behind thinking on economic and environmental issues. Yet as Geoff Mulgan, Chief Executive of Britain’s Young Foundation, argued in this Grattan seminar, history shows that without design that takes account of social needs, built environments can easily lead to isolated individuals and communities. Design has to incorporate an understanding of how people live, what makes them feel they belong, and the right balance of interaction and privacy.
