Summer Reading List for the Prime Minister
Every year, Grattan Institute selects six thought-provoking works – five non-fiction, one fiction – as a recommended summer reading list for the Prime Minister. The list comprises books, essays, and articles, and is launched at an end-of-year event at the State Library of Victoria.
Entries are currently open for the 2021 Reading List.
Works considered for the list must:
- Relate to some aspect of Australian public policy and decision making;
- Be readable – we’re looking for page-turners and tight, compelling arguments.
Due to our independence, we can’t accept books by politicians or about individual political parties.
We prefer Australian authors, although the list is not exclusive of international works. People from Indigenous and diverse backgrounds are actively encouraged to submit their work.
For an illustration of the sort of works we consider, view the 2020 Summer Reading List for the Prime Minister.

Wonks’ List
In addition to the Summer Reading List, we compile an annual Wonks’ List of the best policy and economics books, essays, and articles. This list is aimed at policy advisors, researchers and wonks, and features works that present new ideas and evidence relevant to policy issues.
