Australia’s retirement incomes system faces some big challenges. Grattan Institute’s Money in Retirement report showed that while most Australians can expect the same, or a higher, living standard in retirement as when working, retirees who rent are at growing risk of poverty. In this Forward Thinking event, the panel discussed what the winner of the May 18 federal election should do to fix superannuation, and the retirement incomes system more broadly.

At this Policy Pitch event, the panel looked at how current generations are faring in retirement, and what kind of retirement we can all expect in the future. They discussed the policy levers such as the Super Guarantee, superannuation draw-down rules, retirement ages, and the level and means testing of the Age Pension. And they explored the trade-offs that these involve for spending before retirement and for government budgets.
