Australia has an equity problem in schools. Vulnerable children start school behind, and fall behind even further over their school years. Remote schooling during COVID lockdowns has made these problems even worse.

Teachers and students responded quickly and well to remote learning when the COVID-19 crisis forced the closure of schools. But new research suggests most students learnt less at home than they would have in the classroom – and that disadvantaged students fell further behind.

The discussion drew on Grattan’s Commonwealth Orange Book 2019, which identifies policy priorities for the next government.
