Housing isn’t affordable for many low-income Victorians. Low-income households are spending more of what money they have on housing. People who rent are much more vulnerable, especially young people on income support.

Homelessness is increasing, not only in Victoria but also across Australia. In Victoria, most homeless people are under the age of 35.

In this presentation to the Victorian Legislative Council’s inquiry into homelessness, Brendan Coates, director of the Household Finances Program at Grattan Institute, shows that if policy makers want to reduce inequality, they need to tackle the scourge of homelessness.
