How to transform maths teaching: Lessons from The Entrance

How can primary schools transform their maths teaching? Here’s your chance to get insights straight from educators who’ve made it happen.

A Grattan Institute Webinar

Date: Thursday 26 June
Time: 7.00pm to 7.45pm AEST

In this special Grattan Institute Webinar, our Deputy Program Director for Education, Amy Haywood, will talk with school leaders from The Entrance, a case study school profiled in Grattan’s recent guide for principals, The Maths Guarantee: How to implement great maths teaching in primary schools.

The Entrance Public School has taken great strides in maths. Serving a highly disadvantaged community on the NSW central coast, over the past six years it has transformed the way it teaches maths – implementing a systematic, evidence-informed approach. Students are now explicitly taught new content step-by-step, and given lots of opportunities to practice and develop fluency, before applying new knowledge and skills to novel problems. The results are remarkable: student performance has improved, fewer students need catch-up support, and classes are calmer.

In this webinar, Amy will speak with Dave Stitt, Rebecca Kelaher, and Donna Andrews, the Principal and two Assistant Principals at The Entrance.

Dave, Rebecca, and Donna will talk about why – and how – they overhauled their approach to maths, including significant investments in curriculum, assessment, and professional learning. And we will set aside time so they can answer your questions.

Whether you’re a principal, teacher, parent, or just passionate about helping all students succeed in maths, you won’t want to miss these valuable insights straight from the classroom.
