Australia’s electricity sector is rapidly heading for a low-emissions future, yet policy makers and commentators disagree on how to sustain this momentum while maintaining reliability and affordability. Join this joint State Library Victoria/Grattan Institute Webinar for a moderated discussion about the future of our electricity grid.


Nicola Falcon is a senior executive at the Australian Energy Market Operator; Pierluigi Mancarella is the Chair Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the University of Melbourne; James Ha is an Associate in Grattan Institute’s Energy and Climate Change Program; and Tony Wood is the Director of Grattan’s Energy and Climate Change Program.   Tony and James are the authors of Grattan’s recently published report, Go for net zero: a practical plan for reliable, affordable, low-emissions electricity.

Speakers

Nicola Falcon is Group Manager of Forecasting at the Australian Energy Market Operator. She has nearly 20 years’ experience in the energy and environment sectors and has managed assignments in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, and North America. Nicola assesses future electricity and gas supply needs, and provides strategic advice on the transmission needs of the National Electricity Market. She heads up major publications including the Gas Statement of Opportunities and the Electricity Statement of Opportunities, and helps provide critical modelling that supports AEMO’s Integrated System Plan.

Pierluigi Mancarella is Chair Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the University of Melbourne, and Professor of Smart Energy Systems at the University of Manchester in the UK. Pierluigi obtained the PhD degree in Power Systems from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, has been a Research Associate at Imperial College London, and has held visiting research positions at Sintef/NTNU in Norway and NREL in Colorado, as well as visiting professorships at Ecole Centrale de Lille in France and the Universidad de Chile.

James Ha is an Associate in Grattan Institute’s Energy and Climate Change Program. Since joining Grattan as a policy analyst in 2018, James has worked in the Transport and Cities, Higher Education, and Energy and Climate Change programs. He completed his Bachelor of Science and Concurrent Diploma of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Melbourne in 2017, majoring in statistics and chemistry.


Moderator

Tony Wood has been Director of the Energy and Climate Change Program at Grattan Institute since 2011, after 14 years working at Origin Energy in senior executive roles. From 2009 to 2014 he was also Program Director of Clean Energy Projects at the Clinton Foundation, advising governments in the Asia-Pacific region on effective deployment of large-scale, low-emission energy technologies. In 2008, he was seconded to provide an industry perspective to the first Garnaut climate change review.
