Submission to the Senate Select Committee on Electric Vehicles, August 2018
Electric vehicles offer substantial environmental, social and economic benefits for Australia, and policy makers should encourage their use. They help the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and general air pollution, and their widespread uptake would reduce Australia’s dependence on imported transport fuels. In this submission to the Senate Select Committee on Electric Vehicles, Grattan Institute’s Energy Program Director Tony Wood says hybrid vehicles are slowly gaining in popularity in Australia, and electric vehicles are expected to be cost-competitive by around 2030. He calls on the COAG Energy Council to help coordinate trials of electric and autonomous vehicles, and to support their efficient adoption.
