The university gender gap
University equity policy is based on the idea that, for gender, enrolment diversity should roughly reflect population diversity. However, over the past half century Australian higher education has been feminised. Nearly 60% of university enrolments are women, who have improved their relative position in every year but one since 1957. The key question is: does this pattern largely reflect different choices, or opportunities denied? If the former, then gender differences are not so concerning.
