The rise of university rankings

by Andrew Norton

Ranking systems encourage a focus on the indicators they measure. The difficulties of developing a comparable measure of teaching effectiveness have led university ranking frameworks to privilege research output. The practical result has been to further embed an academic culture where research is considered to be more important than teaching. The planned My University website has the potential to be an important counter to this trend as it will consider how well universities deliver for their students.
